While far less powerful & more specialized than the sensors found aboard starships & vehicles, portable scanners are relatively inexpensive handheld units that are perfect scouting tools for reconnaissance & exploration missions. The Crynocorp. EnhanceScan is a typical multipurpose sensor unit & was the portable scanner of choice for the Rebel Alliance's scouts, from those stationed on the frigid ice world of Hoth to the teams that patrolled Arbra's lush jungles & Thila's unforgiving mountains. An improved version of the earlier Lifedetec bioscanner, the EhanceScan added communications, metal detection, & motion sensor modules to its attributes. The bioscanner module can detect life-forms within 1,500 meters, & its computer memory banks can be preloaded with templates that allow the user to identify over three hundred different creatures. The communications scanner cannot transit messages, but it automatically intercepts any standard-frequency comlink transmissions within three kilometers. Comlinks can be linked to the scanner through a data cable & configured to monitor any active frequencies. The EnhanceScan's motion sensor module detects any movement within five hundred meters & can be programmed to sound an alarm, allowing the scanner to be used as an automated camp sentry. It can be programmed to search for concentrations of specific metals within a maximum range of approximately a hundred meters.
The unit's computer can control all four scanner modes simultaneously. Depending on the mode in use, the readout screen displays the shape & vital data of detected life-forms, the characteristics of intercepted comlink transmissions, or detected metal concentrations. In each mode the specific location & movement are also indicated. The EnhanceScan's data ports allow it to link with computers, datapads, & droids to exchange data. Six rechargeable power cells last for up to ten days of continuous operation. While the EnhanceScan combines several distinct sensor arrays in one unit, single-purpose scanners are also popular because they offer good performance in an economical package. Specialized scanners may gather data about life-forms, comlink transmissions, energy emissions, & geothermal activity. Sonic scanners can amplify sounds at long range or scan above & beneath the user's hearing range. Visual scanners may be equipped with long-range magnifiers or infrared or ultraviolet optics. Other specialized scanners include medical scanners, technical scanners (which examine repulsorlift drives & other common machinery), & geological scanners, which detect precious minerals & ore deposits. These units vary widely in cost & performance. Durability is important, & is often wise to spend a few extra credits to get a scanner with a sturdy casing so that the internal sensors are not easily knocked out of alignment or damaged.
