After close observation of Kylo’s lightsaber I believe it is in fact Darth Vader’s. It would have been damaged after look disarmed Vader and it fell down the shaft. Then with the help of Snoke’s knowledge of ancient saber technology, he repaired it. But due to the damaged crystal or even the hilt itself, it’s unstable. If just the hilt, I imagine it will be more stable in episode 8 as it’s clearly been improved. Not just some welded junk.
The red crystal around Luke’s neck is actually his original green crystal. Possibly while experimenting with the dark side of the force, in an attempt to create balance, Luke temporarily fell to the dark side and in a moment of RAW power, he accidentally destroyed the Jedi temple himself.
This is the raw power that he’d only seen once before. The power that scares him now and why he went into exile. Not to protect himself, but to protect others from what he is capable of.
As we know with new canon, the color of the crystal is dependent on the force user and their position with the force. This is why his green crystal is now red and retired from it’s hilt and worn around his neck instead.November 11, 2017 at 4:25 am #4133

Okay I was just thinking about it and what if Luke turned it red on purpose?
What if in trying to find balance, he had to embrace his dark side and come back? What if he needed to make his crystal bleed and then turn it white the way Ahsoka did?
And with Snoke having a black Onyx crystal it could lead to an epic lightsaber battle. White vs Black. The Light vs Darkness.November 30, 2017 at 3:08 pm #4401
