Mace Windu is known as one of the most skilled lightsaber combatants in the Star Wars universe. They were two very different religions, but the Sith were once Jedi, so they both have some similar practices. One of these practices is the use of the 7 lightsaber forms. Form VII, known as Juyo, was frowned upon by the Jedi Order as it was too aggressive and offensive, making the user vulnerable to the dark side. This made it the favored style of many Sith Lords, like Darth Sidious and Maul. In order to combat this complication, Windu created Vapaad as a variation of Juyo that channels the dark side tendencies of the form instead of allowing the user to get swallowed up by them.

In the Star Wars: Republic comic series, Windu was on a mission with Jedi Master Sora Bulq when Bulq failed to control his emotions when using Juyo, and ended up falling to the dark side and becoming an acolyte of Dooku. Even though he was a strict follower of the old Jedi guidelines, he was able to channel the dark side in ways that no Jedi ever has before. This would have made him an ideal master in the Legends-era New Jedi Order, which sought to control their emotions, unlike the Sith who were controlled by them, and the Old Jedi Order, who suppressed them.
