Six years after his "death" at the hands of Darth Vader, Emperor Palpatine emerged from Byss in a newly cloned body & wrecked a devastating vengeance against the New Republic. Byss, hidden in the very center of the galaxy, was a world shrouded in mystery & myth. It was a serene, beautiful sphere dotted with lake chains & warmed by blue-green sunlight. Emperor Palpatine had long used the pleasant planet as his personal retreat & a secret home for his growing clone. After Grand Admiral Thrawn succeeded in weakening the New Republic, the reborn Emperor made his move-his loyal armies forced the upstart government to evacuate Coruscant. Flush with victory, Palpatine sent his World Devastators to ravage Mon Calamari & captured his old nemesis, Luke Skywalker. Brought before the Emperor on Byss, Luke decided on a risky strategy-he would become Palpatine's servant & conquer the dark side from within. Leia sensed her brother's danger & convinced Han Solo to mount a rescue operation. After hitching passage with Han's smuggling friends, the Falcon landed in the Emperor's Citadel. As Leia had intended, they were brought before Luke-but he had changed. Distant & cold, he watched as his friends were imprisoned.
But Luke had not gone as far into the dark side as it appeared. He loaded a control code that would stop the World Devastators into the memory of R2-D2 & urged Leia to escape back to the New Republic with the information. The group fled aboard the Falcon. Left behind on Byss, Luke lost to the Emperor in a lightsaber duel. Palpatine took his beaten for & boarded his flagship for a showdown with the New Republic at Da Soocha V.
The Emperor was defeated at the Pinnacle Moon, but the war was far from over. Taking a new clone body, Palpatine struck with a new planet-destroying weapon in orbit around Byss-the deadly Galaxy Gun. The New Republic came up with a bold plan. Rebel Commandos hijacked a shipment of new X-1 Viper battle droids on its way to Byss & rode the freighter to its destination. Once they arrived, Lando Calrissian & other armored droids in a do-or-die attempt to capture the Imperial Citadel. The Citadel's turbolasers couldn't scratch the sturdy Vipers' molecular shielding, but the high-tech hulls were no match for the teeth of Palpatine's monstrous "chrysalis beasts." Lando & the rest were saved from certain death by a group of courageous smugglers. Soon afterward, in a battle near Onderon, the Rebels boarded the Emperor's new flagship, Eclipse II. R2-D2 sent the ship through hyperspace on a ramming course with the Galaxy Gun at Byss. As the two weapons collided, the Galaxy Gun mistakenly fired one of its missiles at Byss 's core. The projectile set off an unstoppable nucleonic chain reaction. Within moments the Emperor's throne world was nothing but a cloud of rubble, & the New Republic had won another hard-fought victory.
