Before I dig in, I will need to clarify that these tales series are shorts, not full episodes. They are not supposed to tell full stories but are meant to showcase events. From that perspective, you see that appropriate sense of time is irrelevant. However, that doesn't fix the issue of exterior stories and canon. I will explain this later. I will also say that I won't be talking about Morgan's episodes because I genuinely don't care about her. Shes just another background character to me. Last thing, I will only talk about animation and film canon and not anything legends or in comics and novels. With that, lets begin.
Barriss Episode 1:
I don't have any negative things to say about this episode. It was a strong start, it was fun, it was great. Well I guess the only complaint I have was the blood. I get that Star Wars has had blood in scenes before, but I'm not a fan of it. It takes the TCW feel right out of it. Other than that, it was great. The character designs were great, especially Lyn. I actually really like her character design. The grand inquisitor looked pretty okay for the most part, maybe a slightly bigger head and slightly less pocky face wave bumps would have improved it but still, he looks pretty good. The fight choreography was pretty neat, a bit more martial arts rather than angry brawling than usual which is always nice to see. We also got to see the first generation of inquisitors (I assume thats the case). The one who lost to Ahsoka sadly didn't get any lines but his mere presence stole the shots he was in imo.
Barriss Episode 2:
Again, super strong start. We see Barriss learning from Lyn and having her own disagreements. The slaughtering of the innocent was a great scene cause inquisitors are evil and they really need to own it. The huge problem starts right after the jedi gets sliced. HIS SPINE WAS SLICED UP, HOW HE IS EVEN CLOSE TO BEING ALIVE. I dont care if it grazed him, the writers already showed how brutal Lyn is so why she didn't just behead him is just rly stupid to me. If Lyn never killed and only knocked people out, then fine, this makes sense. But she slaughtered like 30 people without mercy and without caring. Lightsabers just dont kill anymore I guess. Also, Barriss over powering Lyn as well with a force push, thats just messed up. I'm sorry, but Barriss trained as a healer. She beat Ahsoka by ambushing her and setting up traps, using every advantage possible. Lyn looks like a Jedi knight and trained in the darkside way longer than Barriss did so theres no way she could do that. I could get behind it if Barriss was an actual fighter like Ahsoka was. The episode as a whole was solid, the ending was not great.
Barriss Episode 3:
The worst offender. I get that this show is a series of shorts, but that doesnt excuse the poor decision. Fans have waiting and speculated on Barriss's character arc post Order 66 and this is what we get. If we got a TCW arc dedicated to her, then fine, this is a pretty nice way to "end" her journey (idk if its her end, probably not but for now it is). We already got a happy ending type of thing with TBB, we didn't need another one 3 days after. I agree with Theory on this, Barriss's story is and needs to be tied to Ahsoka's. Barriss was introduced as a foil to Ahsoka. Her relationship with Luminara was the opposite to Ahsoka and Anakin. Barriss was more obedient, respectful and disciplined while Ahsoka was snippy, agitating, immature and rogue. Barriss becoming an inquisitor is a good progression (I would talk about all the galaxy politics and self preservation reasoning for this but nah, not today) just like Ahsoka becoming Fulcrum is. So when they meet up again before the events of Rebels, they would have a rivalry akin to Obi-Wan and Maul. We could very easily get a super huge story about that. But instead of the interesting route, they go for this. Don't get me wrong, its fine but when you consider her place in canon, its a waste. Barriss's story is a substory of Ahsoka's. The proof is that she has no character without Ahsoka as she did not have any episodes dedicated to her alone in TCW. Her very existence is to either to be a foil to Ahsoka or to better her development.
thats it from me, thanks for reading and MTFBWY!
