Organized Crime in a Galaxy Far Far Away.
I’m totally stoked about the new SW movie, which got me thinking the other day about how prevalent organized crime (like the Mafia, the Yakuza, etc) must be in the Star Wars universe.
Space is Big, After All.
We’ve heard in the first couple of movies at least indirectly of smugglers, crime bosses, etc. Seems to me that organized crime must be everywhere in the galaxy, which begs the question of how organized is it? Are there established guilds of thieves, smugglers, mercenaries, bounty hunters, etc? For the latter it seems that there must be. Given how easy it was to rustle up a line of them to track down Millenium Falcon. That being the case, does the Empire trouble to police them? I’d think not, again considering how willing they were to put out a call for bounty hunters as mentioned above.
Then again, you can’t let organized crime do its thing unchecked. That makes the population unhappy, and unhappy people tend to revolt. Gangsters also tend to acquire and cultivate dirt that can come out at the most inopportune of times, regarding Imperial officials and their dealings. That can make unhappy people willing to revolt, too.
Was the Galaxy Lawless after the Empire?
When the Empire fell, it had be a whole new game for organized crime. I have to wonder how this will play out as a new government attempts to establish itself. How far are they going to get, or be allowed to get, before one or more crime syndicates becomes unhappy with how the new government is ruling things?
I’m betting that they won’t wait, that they’ll start to insinuate and inveigle themselves into whatever new government is created from the remains of the Empire. This could play out in a lot of ways. Maybe the next movie or so should be about when the immovable object that is the crime syndicate on Planet Younameit, crosses paths with the unstoppable force (no pun intended) of this new government.
Maybe that will become the first test of this new government, how it manages (or fails to manage) organized crime. Could that become the source of conflict for future movies, as the various criminal entities join forces (maybe) to show the new government who’s really in charge.
Maybe I should suggest the idea to someone…
