What Are The Origins of the first Jedi?
We are seeing more things from the Legends timeline becoming Canon: from large additions such as Thrawn, to smaller Easter-Eggs such as Galen Erso in Rogue One alluding to Starkiller from The Force Unleashed. Many parallels can be drawn between the two, however the origins of the Jedi are still currently uncertain.
How Did This Story Play Out in Legends?
In Legends, the first Jedi Order was actually much different than the order we see in the prequel trilogy. 36,453 years before the Battle of Yavin, eight ancient vessels known as the Tho Yor, which resided on eight different planets, started to gather up force sensitive beings and ascend into space. These ships (if you could call them that) began to converge on a jungle planet known as Tython, which had a singular giant Tho Yor located on the surface. The passengers of the Tho Yor began to form the first galactic organization of force wielders, soon dubbing themselves the Je’Daii (Keepers of the Balance) and they began to erect temples around where each Tho Yor settled on Tython.
What Did This Order Look Like?
For generations, this order dedicated themselves to keeping the force balanced, not following the light or the dark exclusively. Something that is a stark difference from the Jedi and Sith we know from the films. They took keeping the balance so seriously that they would exile members who strayed too close to either side to one of Tython’s moons (Alsha and Bendu) to meditate and find their balance before they could return. This type of treatment would even reach to those who were born on Tython that weren’t force sensitive. Effectively breaking up families and sending people away to keep the planet pure. It was the practice of keeping balance at all costs that brought infighting between followers of each side of the force. Which in turn brought a split in the order between the dark and the light. This divide inevitably led the light-siders to become the Jedi order, and join the newly formed Galactic Republic. As the dark-siders went to Korriban (the home planet of the Sith species) creating the Sith we know today.
Is it Possible the New Canon will Feature Any of This?
It is still up in the air if we will see these themes carried over into the new canon. We have seen several things allude to this story arc, such as Ahsoka’s alias in her solo novel being “Ashla,” and of course the force sensitive being Bendu from Rebels. An origin of the Jedi story would be great material for the Game of Thrones writers to cover in their future Star Wars saga, and who knows, we could possibly even see a whole TV series dedicated to this!
