The Last Jedi ENDING FULLY EXPLAINED (SPOILERS) – Star Wars Explained
This article and accompanying video contains spoilers, so please do not continue reading if you haven’t seen The Last Jedi yet. The article is intended as an explanation of the ending of the movie for people who have already seen it (and spoiler fans of course).
The Last Jedi pretty much picks up directly after the events of The Force Awakens. As the opening crawl fades away, we are immediately transported into an epic space battle between The First Order and The Resistance. Meanwhile on Ahch-To, Rey endeavours to enlist the help of Jedi Master Luke Skywalker, gain some training and try to find out who her parents are.
“This is not going to go the way you think” Luke Skywalker, The Last Jedi
Obviously I don’t want to spell out the whole movie, that’s what novelisations are for, but the film takes a lot of surprising twists and turns, many of which none of us saw coming. In today’s Star Wars Theory video, I want to concentrate on the end of the movie. In the last act, we get to see is a showdown between Kylo Ren and Luke Skywalker and that’s what I want to concentrate on today. Luke uses some kind of force projection of himself tricking Kylo Ren and buying time for the last of The Resistance to make good their escape, but at a high cost as Luke dies. He then transforms into the Force, much like Obi-Wan Kenobi in A New Hope. Also, if you haven’t seen it yet and you’re expecting the Luke everyone knows from the original trilogy, I’m sorry, but he doesn’t exist any more. He’s obviously a lot older, but his personality has changed. He’s become jaded and bitter in his old age. This is explained in the movie however.
All in all, I did enjoy the movie, but I do know it has some flaws. I’ll go in to those in a future video.
Check out the video below where I go in to a lot more detail about what I think the ending meant. It would also be great if you would leave your comments either on the Star Wars Theory YouTube channel, here in the comments section, or on any of the Star Wars Theory social media sites. I’ve been reading mixed reactions to the movie, so I’ve included a poll (bottom of the page) too.
I really hope you enjoyed the movie guys and for those who haven’t seen it yet, I hope you have a great time. Thanks for watching my Jedi and Sith friends and remember, MTFBWY, always!
