It’s Time to Answer This Once and for All
There are few age-old questions that all Star Wars fans ask, from “Who shot first?” to “Was Anakin really the chosen one?” Many playgrounds during recess turned into a debate forum. One particular topic has always been disputed: the Light Side, or the Dark Side, which is stronger? (For a detailed debate on this, check out the latest episode of the CHATTER SQUADRON podcast at the end of the article!) While pondering the merits of the Jedi VS the Sith, something crossed my mind that may just be the answer!
LUKE: …Is the dark side stronger?
YODA: No, no, no. Quicker, easier, more seductive.
YODA: But beware of the dark side. Anger, fear, aggression; the dark side of the Force are they. Easily they flow, quick to join you in a fight. If once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny, consume you it will, as it did Obi-Wan’s apprentice.
What stands out to me is that Yoda seems to always be concerned about the Dark Side’s power to overcome its practitioners, and that once it has its grip on them, it will dictate what they do. The thought that crossed my mind is that a Sith may not be inherently more powerful than a Jedi, but rather the Dark Side may be able to manifest itself more freely in them.
I now believe that the Dark and the Light are on equal footing in terms of power. We are currently seeing Kylo Ren stop blaster bolts with the Dark Side, and Rey split solid stone with the Light. While the Jedi may not be able to control powerful abilities as often as the Sith, the Sith choose to give in to the Dark Side’s power, and the Dark Side has more of a chance to work through the Force user. I do believe that in order to use the Dark Side, you must give yourself over to it fully first, where as the Jedi try to ponder on the true will of the Force, potentially holding them back from unleashing the force’s power. While it’s not the most definitive answer, saying one side is stronger than the other in full confidence is like saying one side of the same quarter is worth more than the other.
