Star Wars: Bloodline is a canon novel that endeavours to explain the inner workings of the New Republic after the events of Return of the Jedi. The book informs us how the Resistance (first seen in The Force Awakens) was initially created. The novel’s main focus is on Princess Leia, her Senate staff and several other protagonists.
Bloodline was the first novel Claudia Gray wrote for Disney’s new canon however, she now has two additional canon novels: the highly acclaimed Lost Stars and the newly released Leia: Princess of Alderaan. Gray has the unique ability to touch on her characters in a way that makes you value every single one of them, even if they don’t seem important to the overall story. Her writing style is skilled and she is always sending the plot into new and surprising directions.
The Leia we get in Bloodline isn’t exactly the same person we know from A New Hope. She’s aged somewhat and is a mother to her son, Ben (latterly known as Kylo Ren). Although she doesn’t go by the title ‘Princess’ anymore, she is still the badass fighter every Star Wars fan knows and loves. She’s witty, funny, sarcastic, quick on her feet and has bags of determination. Bloodline gives us a new, in-depth look at Leia while reminding us why she is and always will be our Princess.
The supporting characters in the novel are absolutely fantastic (Minor spoilers ahead)! Every one of them is brand new to the franchise (with the exception of Leia and her husband Han Solo of course). Korr Sela, one of Leia’s “helpers,” is a young girl who is much like Leia in her own way. Joph Seastriker, a young, eager Rebel pilot with exceptional flying skills and Ransolm Casterfo, Leia’s counterpart. Randolm is a Senator with opposite political views to Leia’s. He also happens to be an admirer of the long-defeated Empire. Without giving too much away, there are a lot of political insults exchanged in the book.
Overall, Bloodline is everything a good Star Wars book should be. It has all the ingredients a great Star Wars story should have: action, politics, romance, plenty of new aliens and crazy cool planets! Interesting pieces of lore are also added added to the Outer Rim which enriches the already vast Star Wars Universe. It’s a must-read for those who want to know what happened in the years before the events of The Force Awakens.
