At the end of 2016, we lost Carrie Fisher, one of the biggest members of the Star Wars family. While she had a troubled life in many respects, she truly was a living legend according to those who knew her.
After her death, speculation began immediately about her character’s fate in Episode VIII. Was it already on the cards for her time with the franchise to end, or did her passing cause a rewrite?
There are many possible ways Leia could exit the Star Wars saga, so we can only assume many meetings took place to deal with the terrible situation of Carrie’s death with the most respect possible.
If Princess Leia was originally meant to exit in The Last Jedi, a fate like Han’s could be seen as inappropriate considering the actress’s recent death. Where as just not addressing the issue at all and mentioning something in the next film, wouldn’t allow fans to say goodbye properly.
For me, I’d like Lucasfilm to handle the situation something like this:
Imagine a large space battle between The Resistance and First Order. Leia is at the helm of her command vessel. She and Admiral Ackbarr are working tirelessly to hold off their enemies, but the damage to their ship is too great.
Kylo Ren, in his command vessel, is preparing to board his mother’s ship when he notices several smaller craft leaving Leia’s vessel. Before Ren has the time to call for Tie Fighters to pursue the survivors, he notices Leia’s ship accelerating head on towards his own, he commands the pilots to perform evasive action.
We cut back to Leia, in an empty command room, flying the vessel as the remaining members of her crew board escape pods. We then see a shot from behind her, looking out into space through the ship’s view port, we see the stars, the galaxy, we see peace. Slowly the shot tilts downwards as we see Kylo’s flagship come into view.
We cut back to see First Order troops panicking to evade the incoming threat as Kylo stands almost motionless in the centre of it all, sensing who is behind this last ditch effort to destroy him. We then see a close up of Leia, the last Princess of Alderaan, lights flickering in her eyes as she closes them.
Next, we see a shot of the two ships colliding, Leia’s cutting through the back portion of Kylo’s ship as they both begin to explode. Then we follow Kylo as he escapes his doomed Star Destroyer, finally reaching his Tie Slicer just in time to save his life. As he flies away, he gazes at what his mother has done to not only save her people, but to stop him too. could this be the event that turns him back from the dark side?
Of course, this is only one of many ways she could exit the saga and it’s purely a theory, but please let me know how much Carrie Fisher meant and Princess Leia meant to you in the comments below and as always, MTFBWY!
