Do you like Star Wars? Of course you do or you wouldn’t be reading this right now. Do you like collecting Star Wars? Do you like board games? Do you like strategy games? Then X-Wing Miniatures is a game for you.
This table top game from Fantasy Flight Games lets you pilot some of your favourite ships from the movies. Pilot a YT-1300 against Boba Fett in his Firespray, or if you feel like going to the Dark Side, you can fly Darth Vader and a few of his Tie Fighters, against Biggs Darklighter, or Luke Skywalker in their T-65 X-Wings. There are three different factions to choose from including Rebels, Empire, and Scum and Villainy.
What ships can I use?
There are currently 54 ships to play with and ship sizes range from Small, Large and Huge. The scale of the models is 1/270, but the detail in each ship is outstanding. Not only are there 54 ships to choose from, but each ship has several pilots to choose from too. Fly the Y-wing as “Dutch” Vander or as a Gold Squadron Pilot. Or fly both, if you have 2 Y-Wing ships. Each ship can be upgraded with included upgrade cards. For instance, the YT-1300 can be upgraded with the Millennium Falcon Title card to give it certain abilities that it wouldn’t normally have. Fly your X-Wing fighter as Luke Skywalker with the R2-D2 or BB-8 upgrade card.
How do I play?
The game is normally played on a 3 X 3 feet mat and after setting up your ships on opposing sides, there are a few phases to each round. Selecting which direction you want your ships to move using the provided maneuver dial, moving your ships, performing an action and then going into combat. During combat, each player (attacker and defender) uses different dice. The attacker attacks with red dice and the defender defends with his or her green dice. Each ship has a certain number of hit points between Hull and Shields. A round may go like this: Darth Vader flying in his TIE Advanced attacks Chewbacca in the Millennium Falcon. Darth Vader has an attack rating of 2, whereas Chewie in the YT-1300 has an Agility rating of 1. The player using Vader rolls 2 attack dice and let’s say gets one hit and one miss and the player rolling for Chewie rolls one Evade result. Since the results are one hit and one evade, there is NO damage. Let’s say Vader rolled two hits and Chewie rolls a blank, then Chewie receives 2 damage, which normally means that he would lose 2 of his shields. Once a ship loses all shields and hull points, that ship is destroyed.
There are more rules that add cinematic detail to the game, such as missiles, torpedoes, ship modifications, target locks, ion tokens, tractor beams, weapons disabled and title cards. There are crew members such as Recon Specialist or Emperor Palpatinefor example. These allow you to change one of your dice results to a desired outcome once per round.
What am I getting myself into?
Game time limits are usually set at 75 minutes and each side gets 100 points to build their squad. Every ship costs a different Squad point cost as do upgrade cards. Smaller ships usually have a lower squad cost than larger ships, so it is common to see a player flying a YT-1300 and one X-wing against a player flying 7 or 8 basic TIE Fighters. Players can often add Asteroids or Space debris on the mat for added cinematic effect, but be careful! The Odds of successfully navigating through an Asteroid field is 3,720 to ONE! Actually in this game the odds are a lot less, but running into asteroids could cause damage to your ship. Normal games are played between two players, but fans of the game have created alternate games where up to 3-8 players can each choose a ship to build with a certain number of squad points, then it’s every player for themselves and the game is over either when there is one ship left, or the ship with the most hits or kills in a 75 minute time limit wins. Competition levels range from friendly family to World Championship games. Yes there is actually a World Championship for X-Wing miniatures.
No matter how you play, you will have a good time and remember when you fly, MTFBWY, always!
